Jelena Dokic became a household name when she was just 16-years-old after knocking out then-tennis world number one Martina Hingis in the 1999 Wimbledon Championship. Behind closed doors however, Jelena was suffering years of extreme physical and mental abuse from her father.
Now, the tennis star, coach, commentator and best-selling author, has sat down with fellow athlete, author and motivational speaker Turia Pitt in the latest season of Turia Pitt Is Hard Work.
In the interview, Jelena recalls attempting to sleep overnight in the players’ lounge after a tennis match because she had no where to go, the impact of body image and shaming, and the power of telling her story.
The pain and the scars; I think in a way, it’s a part of me. It’s a part of my story… The past doesn’t have to define me, but it’s a part of me. It’s made me who I am and you know what, It’s made me a pretty strong person.
