“I love this job – it is an honour and privilege to represent the people of Melbourne,” she said.

“The City of Melbourne was in dire need of leadership when I was elected as lord mayor in 2018,” she added.

Ms Capp is expected to finish in the role in June and will work with the council and CEO on “an orderly transition plan”.

In November 2020, the 56-year-old was re-elected for another four-year term.

She told ABC Radio Melbourne she felt a sense of resolve around this decision, saying “There’s been a lot achieved but it’s my time to go.”

Throughout her tenure, Ms Capp has navigated the city through profound challenges, including terror attacks and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“I know hardship is still a reality for many business owners and residents, but the upward trajectory is undeniable. We are once again the driver of Victoria’s economy and a major contributor on the national stage,” she said.

“I’m so proud of our achievements as a council over the past six years.”
