Olympic Torch Arrives In France

The much-anticipated Olympic flame has arrived in France from Greece after 12 days of travelling at sea.

The flame was carried from board by Olympic gold-medalist swimmer Florent Manaudou, with a crowd of 150,000 people gathering to witness the ceremonial moment.

French President Emmanuel Macron said: “With the arrival of the flame, the country enters the game.”

Paralympic champion sprinter Nantenin Keita received the torch before passing it to French rapper Jul.

Chief organiser Tony Estanguet highlighted the significance of Paris hosting the Games after a century-long hiatus.

“The moment has been long-awaited,” he said.

Amid the festivities, security remains a paramount concern, with approximately 6,000 security personnel deployed to ensure the safety of participants and spectators. 

The torch’s journey through more than 450 towns and cities will be closely monitored, with stringent measures in place to mitigate potential risks.

French Interior Ministry spokesperson Camille Chaize said various production measures would be employed.

“Notably the elite National Gendarmerie Intervention Group unit, which will be present at the torch relay from beginning to end.”

Organisations are committed to delivering a “spectacular” and “iconic” Olympics despite potential security threats. 

With most sporting events set to take place in temporary venues around Paris, including historic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, Mr Macron said the Games promise to celebrate athleticism, culture, and unity.
