Tom Rockliff Calls For The AFL To Go Back To A 16 Team Competition

Former Brisbane and Port Adelaide star Tom Rockliff has called for the AFL to return to a 16 team competition.

TOM ROCKLIFF CALLS FOR THE AFL TO GO BACK TO A 16 TEAM COMPETITION:

“I think we got it wrong going from 16 to 18 teams, and I think we’re gonna get it wrong going 18, 19, and then 20,” Rocky said on his show Dead Set Legends with Cal Ferguson and Thomo.

“I just don’t think the depth’s there.

“I think we’re still playing catch up from the Gold Coast Suns and Giants coming into the competition.

“I think we’ve been compromised for a period of time, and I think now there’s games that you go and watch as a supporter, and you know your team is zero chance to win.”

Rocky explained why he feels that paring back two teams would help increase the competition’s quality.

“I think if you scrapped two teams, went back to 16, your depth across the board is going to be a lot better,” he said.

“The players are still gonna get paid the same amount, because you’ve got 100 less on lists, but your depth pool is gonna be a lot better.”

Rocky used Richmond’s current issues with fielding a full strength side to illustrate his point.

“Richmond at the moment, they have 15 injuries,” he said.

“They’ll be able to cover that a lot better than what they can now because they’ll have better players on their list.”
