West Australian Suburban Turf Cricket Association Umpire Manager Mick Martell joined Xav & Katie this morning to give an update on umpire Tony DeNobrega who was hospitalised after being hit in the face with a ball on the weekend.
UPDATE ON LOCAL CRICKET UMPIRE HOSPITALISED BY BALL TO THE FACE:
Mick Martell revealed that DeNobrega initially wanted to go back on and continue to umpire.
“He wanted to return to the field of play,” Mick said.
“He’s a bit of a trooper, Tony!”
The story gained traction after a gruesome Facebook post over the weekend showed the extent of DeNobrega’s injuries:
“There was a fair bit going on at Charles Veryard on Saturday in a 3rd grade match when Senior umpire Tony DeNobrega was struck in the face in what was described as a brutal blow, where a straight drive out of the screws hit Tony flush in the side of the face,” the post read.
“Spending the night in hospital Tony was fortunate enough not to have had any broken bones however the doctors are keeping him in under observation as surgery is not out of the question.
“We wish Tony all the best for a fast recovery from this terrible incident and look forward to him being up and about shortly.
“The umpiring team is right behind you mate.
“Rest up Tony 🏏”
MORE FROM TRIPLE M CRICKET:
Mick said that the incident has already had an impact on some other umpires in the association.
“We had a T20 series in our first division the day after, and an umpire went out and bought a helmet straight away and started wearing it,” he said.
“It’s at the forefront of their minds all the time, getting it… in the shorter form of the game, helmets will become more common.”
