Carrie Bickmore has written a powerful open letter to try to get the government – and men – to listen to the fear that women feel about the threat of violence. However, for many years, people haven’t listened to women. So on ‘The Carrie & Tommy Show’, Tommy Little read out Carrie Bickmore’s letter. The result has been seen and heard by millions. The Australian Government has called the scale of violence against women a “national crisis”. This week it pledged nearly $1bn to address the issue, introducing a raft of new measures for women suffering and trying to leave domestic violence.
However, even Prime Minister Anthony Albanese acknowledged he and the country have to do much better.
Carrie Bickmore agrees, which is why she asked Tommy Little to read out her letter live on the radio. Carrie begged men to “Stand up and speak up and speak loudly!”
“Us women have been talking about this issue forever and no one seems to be listening,” explained Carrie. “So I’m thinking if you read out the thoughts that I wrote down, it might mean more people will listen or it might just give a different perspective on what it feels like to be a woman in this country at the moment.”
An audibly upset Tommy Little had to take breaks during the reading of the compelling letter that detailed how women feel about the daily threat they feel. It also listed the scale of violence against women, including a women dying at the hands of a man every four days.
