Merv Hughes was famous for plenty of things in his cricket career — bowling fast, hilarious sledging, playing to the MCG crowd, and sticking his tongue in Allan Border’s ear.
On today’s Willow Talk, he explained how the celebration came about — and how AB’s ear tastes!
LISTEN HERE:
“If someone did something good, if you could get the tongue in their ear, they had to shout you a beer,” Merv explained in response to a question from Adam Peacock about the infamous celebration.
“So that’s where it came from… why did I keep doing it to Allan Border people ask?
“Well he kept bowling me uphill into the wind and looking after his red-headed mate from Queensland, Craig McDermott… so I hated that, and I found out he hated my tongue in his ear — so every chance I got it was BANG, straight in there!”
Vintage Merv!

“Allan Border’s ear, not too bad, although on a hot, humid day, it was a little bit salty,” Merv said when asked by Adam Peacock how it tasted.
“I tried to stay a bit clear of that!”
