‘We should be cutting the welfare’ Police Union President Ian Leavers’ Solution For Youth Crime

Following the recent surge in youth crime related deaths, Queensland Police Union President Ian leavers told Triple M Breakfast with Marto, Margaux and Dan ‘the responsibility starts at home for preventing youth crime’.

This means tougher penalties on parents – including the reduction of welfare.

 “Some of the schools are doing the best they can. I think the responsibility lands on the parents.” Leavers said.

“We know the risk indicators, we know when an unborn child is going to go and end up in the criminal justice system. We know at the age of one, two, three, four and five – what’s going to happen. The first 1,000 days of life is where a young person’s life is going to be shaped. Some of these parents are not deserving of having a children.

We should be cutting their welfare too. I’ve got to be upfront on this… The kids aren’t getting the money, they’re not getting fed and these people are using it for own vices. Let’s cut their welfare, where it hurts and then we’ve got to look at what we’re doing with the children.” he said.
