Detective Superintendent Hall O’Meagher said that the body had been in the area “for some time” and was not in a condition suitable for visual identification.

“The remains, as you can appreciate, having been in the open and in the environment for some time, poses some difficulties for us in terms of identification and also recovery,” Superintendent O’Meagher said.

The 38-year-old’s family has agreed to provide DNA samples to aid the identification process.

“We have been in contact with Mr Lyons’s family. We’re working closely with them in this difficult time for them,” he said.

“They’re assisting us with our inquiries, and we’re providing them with the support that they need during this difficult time.”

While the cause of death remains unknown, Detective Superintendent O’Meagher revealed that a post-mortem examination scheduled for later in the week should provide forensic evidence to confirm the identity of the remains.

Police are urging anyone who visited Point Hut Crossing over the past few months and might possess information about Mr Lyons to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers.
