Former Geelong and GWS goal kicking maestro Steve Johnson has given some advice to wayward Carlton forward Harry McKay on his errant set shot kicking.
“I would say have a plan of attack from any area of the ground,” Stevie J – who kicked 516 goals in a glittering 293 game career – said on the Sunday Rub.
“You know what kick you’re gonna use, you know if you’re gonna steer one through, you know if you’re gonna snap from any point on the ground.
“I’ve always said to players I don’t mind if you kick a snap, I would kick a snap from here, but I’m not telling you to.
“You’ve just gotta make sure you’ve done the repetitions from every area on the ground, and you know what you’re gonna get from each kick.”
St Kilda Hall of Famer Joey Montagna feels a lot of McKay’s issues stem above his shoulders.
“I think it’s 90% mental,” Joey said.
“The two years previous he kicked 103 goals 64 [behinds].
“Like, he can actually kick goals, that’s 60%, that’s sort of above league average.
“This year it’s in his head, and you could see… he even mumbled something to himself before one of his shots at goal.
“He’s in a bad way mentally.”

Nathan Brown agreed, pointing to McKay’s work last year on the snap in particular.
“He was pumping his snaps last year, he’s actually a very good snap,” Browny said.
“That’s left him this year, then he’s gone back to the straight kicks.
“He’s just struggling as ‘what kick am I gonna take?’… he needs to know exactly where he’s gonna kick it, and what sort of kick from where.”
