The Rise And Fall Of NRL Star Jarryd Hayne

Former NRL star Jarryd Hayne has been sentenced to a minimum of three years in prison after being convicted for raping a 26-year-old woman on the night of the 2018 NRL Grand Final.

The former professional footballer will be eligible for parole in under two years due to time already served.

On today’s This Arvo In Sydney, host Sacha Barbour Gatt took a deep dive into the rise and fall of Jarryd Hayne, from NRL poster boy to prison cell.

Judge Graham Turnbull handed down a sentence to Hayne of four years and nine months, with a non-parole period of three years.

Barbour Gatt said when asked if he would like to say anything to the court, he only said

Say no more.”

The judge mentioned Hayne maintained his innocence and, as a result, expressed no guilt or remorse, noting his sporting achievements have been tainted.

Judge Graham Turnbull told the court the complaint had brought the offender to justice.

Judge Turnbull also told Sydney’s Downing Court that Hayne’s offending was “below-mid range” and he had a “seemingly low risk of reoffending”.

In a hearing on Monday, a new statement from the victim was read in which she told the court the event was the beginning of “a never-ending nightmare”.

I am stronger, and I am wiser, but I am damaged, and I won’t ever be the same person,”

she wrote.
