Snapchat Introduces New AI Friend, But Some Says It’s Dangerous

A new feature is being rolled out by the social media app Snapchat called My AI.  

My AI is powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology, and users can ask any question and receive answers in extreme detail. 

Users can customise the chat boy’s name and design a Bitmoji avatar for it, and it sits alongside conversations with real friends.

Snapchat’s chatbot may feel less transactional. However, some responses may include biased, incorrect, or harmful content. 

On today’s The Briefing episode, we talk to AI ethics expert Julian Koplin who says the new technology can be misleading. 

Snapchat is very popular with Australian teenagers. According to the data by the Safety Commissioner, 90 per cent of Snapchat users are between the ages of 13 and 24.

I do think that interacting with the Snapchat AI and ChatGPT and other chatbots is so good, it can feel like you are relating to someone, and you are getting a social connection,”

Koplin said.

Kolin says the disadvantage of My AI is the absence of building an authentic relationship. 

He reminds people that chatbots are unlike humans, and these models are not guaranteed to tell the truth. 

They (AI bots) don’t know what is false. If you enter into interacting with these chatbots with that in mind, that’s a good way to enjoy the good and avoid the bad,”

he said.

When you combine it with the risk that the limitation of this model won’t necessarily be understood by everybody using it.”
