A bushfire east of Perth has destroyed property and burned close to Acacia Prison, Western Australia’s largest correctional facility.
The fire started on Wednesday afternoon near The Lakes, Wooroloo, and Woottating.
An emergency warning was issued within two hours as flames spread quickly, fueled by strong winds.
Aerial footage showed structures, including a shed and water tanks, engulfed in flames.
The fire also came within 800 meters of Acacia Prison. Authorities confirmed the prison is safe and has not been evacuated.
The blaze has burned over 700 hectares and remains uncontained.
Around 150 firefighters and aerial water bombers were working to control it. One firefighter suffered a minor burn but returned to work.
Unconfirmed reports suggest at least one home has been lost.
Assessment teams are on the ground to evaluate the damage.
The fire led to the closure of Great Eastern Highway, though it has since reopened with speed limits.
Weather conditions improved on Wednesday night, allowing the alert level to drop to “watch and act.”
However, rising temperatures and strong winds expected on Thursday may worsen the situation.
The cause of the fire is still unknown. Residents are urged to stay updated through Emergency WA and follow safety instructions.
