Superstar Ed Sheeran will pay tribute to his friend and mentor – with 100,000 people watching.
Ed will play the MCG today, March 2 – the second anniversary of the death of Australian music industry icon, Michael Gudinski.
Michael, who had been Ed’s Australian promoter since the start of his career, always wanted the British musician to perform in his favorite venue – the MCG.
Ed and Matt Gudinski have made the dream come true, with over 100,000 tickets sold for the March 2 show and a record-smashing 107,000 tickets sold to his show the next night. That is the most tickets sold to a single concert in Australian history.
In LiSTNR’s Front and Centre’s tribute to Michael, Ed talks about his connection to the great man.
“I’d never met anyone like him. When I finished my WB show I had 14 of my best school mates, the people I went to school with, to one pub, and Michael. Michael was like one of my school mates but also he was like a manager and also like a father figure.”

Ed – and family – flew to Australia in 2021 and spent two weeks in quarantine to attend Michael’s state memorial.
While in quarantine Ed finished a musical tribute called Visiting Hours, which wound up on his latest album Equals.
“I didn’t know whether to release it or not because it was so personal, I had to send it to Michael’s family and get their approval.”
