It’s been a tumultuous few weeks for the Bombers, who sacked coach Ben Rutten after a disappointing seven-win season.
In a 2021 interview with Luke Darcy, former Essendon Coach John Worsfold comments on the warning he gave the club when he left in 2020.
“You have to build a premiership squad. You can’t just think ‘oh we’re missing this one person we have to go get it at the end of the season, we have more money than everyone else.’ It doesn’t work like that.'”
Listen to John Worsfold’s full warning to Essendon here:
He talks about how you have to take your time, and not rush the process. But as we’ve seen, Essendon are scrambling, searching for what will be third coach in four seasons.
“Essendon in particular were so focused on winning a final. But just because of that, doesn’t give you the right to win a final without doing the hard work, and planning and sticking to a plan. That just doesn’t cut it anymore.”
