Travis Head Reveals How His Broken Hand Led To His Iconic World Cup Final Catch

Travis Head has revealed how the broken hand he suffered in the lead up to Australia’s triumphant 2023 World Cup campaign inadvertently led to the iconic catch he took to dismiss Rohit Sharma in the tournament final.

TRAVIS HEAD ON HOW HIS BROKEN HAND LED TO HIS ICONIC WORLD CUP CATCH:

“My hand in the field was stuffed pretty much,” Head said to Mark Howard on The Howie Games.

“I would hide around the field. The boys really looked after me in where I fielded and what positions.

“I was out in the deep at that time [of the Rohit catch], and Davey (Warner) pretty much the ball before swapped with me to get me into that space.”

Head explained that the Aussie side had planned to keep him away from the ball in the field when possible.

“Basically what we did was wherever the ball spun towards, I stayed on the other side,” he said.

“So Davey went to Rohit’s leg side, which I was stuck on, and I’ll come to the off-side a hit away sort of at point thinking the ball shouldn’t get there… And then that goes up, and then, yeah, held on to it.”

Head revealed that it had been nearly two months since he’d even attempted a catch like it.

“Rohit’s pretty unlucky cause at that time, with everything that was going on with my hand I hadn’t really looked at a high ball since South Africa,” he said.

“So he’s a bit stiff.”

MORE ON TRAVIS HEAD AT THE WORLD CUP:

Head also revealed that despite his retention in the squad representing a serious gamble for Australia, coach Andrew McDonald and captain Pat Cummins retained their unwavering faith in him.

“He (McDonald) was like ‘no, we’re gonna keep you in’, and Pat said the same thing,” Head said.

“He was like ‘We’re keeping you in and we’re gonna win a world cup because of the way we’re gonna stack up… You are a huge piece of the puzzle in how we want to set up to win this World Cup. It’s gonna be vital, so you’re staying, and we’re gonna keep you in the squad.’

“So him and George (Bailey, head selector) don’t get enough credit for the moves that they made during that World Cup.

“I obviously played a huge role in the semi and the final to win it, and if they think had have went on the sensible side of things, I wouldn’t have been there.”

Travis Head also spoke to Howie about captaining South Australia at 21, his breakout Big Bash and Ashes centuries, how becoming a family man has affected his cricket and more.
