“How can we say that we’re a democratic nation with equal rights when gender non-conforming people live in existential terror every day?”
Alok Vaid-Menon is an American author, poet, and public speaker who visited Australia this year to speak at sold-out shows across the country.
But this was not the first time Alok had been down under. Speaking on It’s A Lot with Abbie Chatfield, Alok revealed they were physically attacked on a Melbourne tram during their first visit, and no one did anything to help.
“Some stranger punched me in the face. No one on the tram did anything, and he said, ”m OK with gay people but you’re too much’… I wanted to come back to show the world, you can’t get rid of people like me.”
