Triple M’s Mick Molloy has been an ambassador for Soldier On for many years, proudly championing our courageous Australian Defence Forces. In this special, Mick speaks to diggers and the people who have been there and done it on the frontline and to whom we give thanks this ANZAC Day.
Recorded in 2021, Mick Molloy’s Soldier On Special has won multiple awards and tells the story of the brave men and women who have sacrificed themselves and in many cases have done it tough over the years.
Ex-Servicepeople have been deeply affected by the battles they have faced and historically they have not always had the support they have needed. However, in modern times that has changed thanks to the work of organisations like Soldier On, who help people that have left the forces get support for their mental health, literally saving lives.
Mick’s co-presenter on this special was John Schumann who tells the story of the epic songs he has written, which tell the tale of Aussies in the field of battle, such as “Anzac Biscuits” and “I Was Only Nineteen” about the Vietnam War.
News Presenter and Reporter Hugh Riminton shared his stories covering war zones around the world where he saw Australian service-people up close, doing their duty.
Former Australian Prime Minister, John Howard, also joins Mick to tell the story of his father who was a Digger in World War I. Decades later of course Howard would stand at memorials around the world representing the country, flag and armed forces each Anzac Day and Remembrance Day.
The former PM reflected that back in his father’s day it was rare for the men returning from the war to talk about their experiences. Another example of the importance of the work of Soldier On – getting returnees to open up and process what they’ve gone through.
Solider On is a not-for-profit organisation delivering holistic support services that enable current and former Australian Defence Force personnel, and their families, to lead meaningful civilian lives.
On ANZAC Day we thank all Australian Defence Forces for their service. And we will always remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
