What Dutton’s Nuclear Promise Would Mean For Australia

Peter Dutton has provided Australians with more detail than ever before with how he plans to make the country enter a nuclear power boom.

On Wednesday, the leader of the Opposition announced his plans to build seven nuclear power stations, flagging a major election promise that he hopes will be a “referendum on nuclear energy”.

Emeritus Professor Lan Lowe breaks down what the promise would mean for Australia’s energy plan on The Briefing:

Emeritus Professor Ian Lowe from Griffith University said that one nuclear power station would only provide about ten per cent of Australia’s electricity needs.

“If he really thinks that you could build a Nuclear power station and have it running in ten years in Australia, I want to know what he’s smoking and where I can get some,” Lowe said.

Lower said It’s currently not legal anywhere in Australia to build and operate a Nuclear power station.

“It’s really a recipe for inaction at a time when climate change really demands
urgent action.”
