Trump breaks silence on Albanese win, calls PM ‘very good’ and ‘friendly’

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has received a wave of international congratulations following Labor’s historical victory in the 2025 federal election.

It marked a significant turnaround for Albanese, whose popularity was at record lows at the start of the year.

The Coalition suffered heavy losses, including the high-profile defeat of Liberal leader Peter Dutton in the Brisbane seat of Dickson.

Trump also made it clear he was unfamiliar with former Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, saying, “I have no idea who the other person is that ran against him.”

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also extended his best wishes, emphasising the close ties between the two nations and the continued cooperation under AUKUS.

In Asia, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi both acknowledged Albanese’s renewed mandate.

Albanese is expected to push forward on key reforms, including cost-of-living relief, climate action, housing, and the expansion of Medicare.

“We will govern for everyone, and we will build a better future,” he said.
