Canadian actor Donald Sutherland has died, aged 88, after battling a long illness.
The news was confirmed by Sutherland’s son, Kiefer Sutherland, who described his father as “one of the most important actors in the history of film”.

“Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly,” Kiefer said.
“He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.”
Sutherland’s acting career spanded over 50 years, and will be remembered for his roles in television show M*A*S*H, and movies Don’t Look Now, and The Dirty Dozen.
More recently, Sutherland portrayed ‘President Coriolanus Snow’ in The Hunger Games trilogy.
Sutherland never stopped working, and finished his career having starred in over 200 projects.
Despite his work, Sutherland was never nominated for an Oscar. He did however win an Emmy for the TV film, Citizen X, and two Golden GLobes for Citizen X and Path to War.
Sutherland is survived by his wife and five children.
