Teenager Charged With Terrorism Offences Denied Bail Amidst Alarming Allegations

A 17-year-old charged with terrorism-related offences has been denied bail following messages revealed during a court hearing at Parramatta Children’s Court in New South Wales.

The teenager, one of six arrested in last week’s counterterrorism raids across Sydney and Goulburn, allegedly sought “dirty” guns and discussed plans to harm members of the community.

According to police statements, messages exchanged by the teenager on a secure messaging app allegedly showed him planning an attack targeting non-believers, referring to them as “kufar”, and sought advice on acquiring weapons and a secure location to stash them.

“We’re going to need patience, we’re going to be planning for a while,” police allege he said.

Police allege he inquired about the availability of “nerf guns”, suggesting it was code for “dirty” guns, which could be bought from the black market.

“Don’t worry how much or where the money will come from, you can’t tell anyone about this… my connec (sic) says he will get the money for us,” police allege he sent these messages to the group.

“Do you think they will be dirty? Bring $2000 to $4000. That will get at least two to three guns.”

During the court hearing, Magistrate Janet Wahlquist highlighted the importance of community safety in her decision to deny bail.

Defence barrister Greg James argued that no terrorist act was ultimately planned in the messaging chat.

He told the court that the 17-year-old has no criminal history. However, the teenager is currently facing separate charges that are still pending before the court.
