Ramadan Nights Launches in Southwest Sydney

One of Sydney’s most popular cultural events, Ramadan Nights Lakemba, has returned.   

Last year, the bustling global food bazaar attracting more than 1.2 million total visitors.  

The spectacular celebration is a month-long event, running this year from 21 March to 20 April, from dusk to 3am.   

Whether you have been to this cultural event before or are a first-time visitor, on today’s episode of THIS ARVO IN SYDNEY, host Sacha Barbour Gatt will take you through everything you need to know in under 10 minutes.  

What are Ramadan Nights? What activities are included in this cultural celebration? What do you need to prepare for this event? 

In Islamic culture, Ramadan is the most sacred and important month of the year. It is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, and people with Muslim backgrounds will begin faith fasting during the daylight hours from dawn to sunset.   

Appearing at the top of the episode was LiSTNR Investigation editor Clair Weaver who went to the opening of the Ramadan festival last night.   

Weaver shared her experience of food and culture.  

It was great, a real feast for the senses,”

she said.

Last night was more of a preview because Ramadan officially starts tonight, but we have a fantastic taste of what’s to come,”

She added.

She said there would be more than 75 stores this year, selling traditional food from different countries, including Indonesia, Pakistan, Burma, Cocos Islands and Syria.  

Weaver said that Ramadan became extremely popular after the local Canterbury Bankstown government got involved in the organisation of the event.   

Today, people from all cultures and backgrounds come to visit, and you will likely see images or videos pop up over the next few weeks.”
