The protest led to significant road closures around the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, with parts of the West Gate Freeway and city tram services affected.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese urged protesters to demonstrate peacefully.

“People have a right to protest, but you don’t oppose defence equipment by throwing things at police,” Mr Albanese said.

Protest organisers from Disrupt Land Forces condemned the government’s support of military conflicts.

Disrupt Land Forces spokesperson Jasmine Duff said the protest was sparked by the government’s stance on the Middle East conflict.

“We’re here to stand up for those who have lost their lives due to the kinds of weapons showcased at this convention,” Duff stated.

“Many of the weapons displayed are marketed as battle-tested, and in the case of Israeli arms manufacturers present here, that means tested by killing civilians in Gaza.”

Victoria Police ramped up security for the event, marking their largest operation in over two decades.

The department deployed regional and specialist officers to ensure public safety.

The event is expected to continue until Friday.
