New South Wales Parliament has approved a significant law overnight, outlawing gay conversion practices.
The ban on conversion practices, which was one of Labor’s election promises, marks a significant step forward for LGBTQ rights in the state.
The legislation, welcomed by equality groups, prohibits practices such as religious “straight camps” that attempt to change someone’s sexual orientation.
The marathon debate in the upper house culminated in the passage of the conversion ban after 6am, gaining 22 votes in favour and four against.
The legislation makes it illegal for people to be taken out of NSW to undergo controversial therapy.
The bill also provides exemptions for registered psychologists and families, allowing discussions in those settings to remain legal.
Sydney MP Alex Greenwich said: “The sun rises today on a state that is safer for LGBTQ people.”
Environment Minister and Legislative Council leader Penny Sharpe stated that the bill sends a clear message: “harmful practices are not welcome in NSW”.
“What New South Wales has done today is to say to our LGBTQ community that you are fine just the way you are and that we will look after you and that we will protect you,” she said.
“New South Wales is better today with the passing of this legislation.”
