Sydneysiders will soon be able to splash around at a new pool as the Inner West Council has won approval to build a tidal pool off Callan Park at Lilyfield.
The Lilyfield spot will join a wide range of new pools across the city, including Barangaroo’s Marrinawi Cove and Concord’s Bayview Park.
The 50m pool will feature two floating pontoons and eight swim lanes, located alongisde the Bay Run at Lilyfield.
When will this new pool be built and will it be safe for you to swim in?
In today’s episode of THIS ARVO IN SYDNEY, host Sacha Barbour Gatt spoke to the Mayor of Inner West Council, Darcy Byrne, to explore the safety aspect of the plan and whether there will be shark nets or deterrent buoys to protect the pool.
Despite the local council’s assurance that the water is safe to swim, some people still have reservations.
We’ve now got approval from the Environmental Protection Authority, Sydney Water and NSW Maritime. All agreed that this is a safe location… In terms of the water quality and the sediment,”
Byrne said.
Byrne told This Arvo that the approval process involved two years of extensive water quality testing, environmental impact research, river depth and floor quality testing and approvals from Maritime Services and the Environmental Protection Agency.
He said the project would cost around a couple of million, and he hoped the construction would be kicked off soon.
We want people to come there from day one once it’s opened and enjoy it without having to worry about any danger from either the water quality or from bull sharks.”
