The Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s Opening Night Allstars Supershow at St Kilda’s Palais Theatre was abruptly cancelled Wednesday night after an audience member suffered a fatal medical episode.
Festival organisers confirmed the incident, stating, “the show was stopped and cancelled.”
Victoria Police reported that emergency services were called to the theatre around 9pm, where a man was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities are not treating the death as suspicious and will prepare a report for the coroner.

The Supershow, hosted by comedian Michael Hing, was being filmed for broadcast on ABC TV. According to attendees, the performance continued for approximately 15 minutes while the medical emergency unfolded. Audience members eventually called for the show to stop.
One patron described the scene as “pretty distressing,” noting that some people left the venue in tears.
Festival Director Susan Provan acknowledged the distressing nature of the incident and stated the medical emergency occurred in the balcony seating area. She expressed sympathy for the family and all involved.
Ticket holders have been informed that festival organisers will be contacted regarding the cancelled event.
Comedians and attendees have expressed their condolences on social media. Performer Dave Hughes posted on social media, stating “all performers’ thoughts are with the family affected.”
