Public transport in Victoria is one of the few winners in the state’s budget delivered on Tuesday, with more services to be added and the fare caps to remain… for now at least.
The State Government announced funding to support almost 200 new V/Line weekend services, an increasement to support the more passenger services are seeing since fare prices were capped.

The services introduction will be delayed however until the new set of 23 V/Line trains are built.
On March 31, the prices for V/Line were capped, making the most a passenger would pay to travel is $9.20 or $4.60 for concession. The budget has allowed for the cap to remain however, it’s uncertain if that’s a permanent decision.
Paul Westcott from the Public Transport Users Association agreed the reduced fares would remain for now.
“We are now beginning to see some pattern emerging as to how those fare cuts are panning out,” he said.
“More of the patterns we have seen is [for] longer distance services, particularly services like two buses and trains to places like Swan Hill and Mildura.”
