Australia’s booming longevity sector is attracting attention beyond Hollywood elites, with everyday Australians increasingly turning to advanced health testing to live longer, healthier lives free of chronic disease.
On Tuesday morning’s episode of The Briefing, we take a step inside the world of longevity that puts even Chris Hemsworth to the test, and to speak to one of the doctors behind one of Australia’s leading longevity clinics.
The longevity sector is booming in Australia, already worth billions, and growing.
Dr Stephanie Bishop, a doctor at Everlab, one of Australia’s leading longevity clinics, explained the methodology behind the test.
“They put it through a whole lot of fancy calculations looking at DNA methylation based on the markers on your red blood cells that can give you a biological age,” she said.
Test results can also reveal the effects of stress on the body. Dr Bishop explained that while the body is designed to handle stress, poor diet can amplify its impact.
“Your body is meant to be able to deal with stress… if you’re eating really well, your body’s meant to be able to deal with stress,” she said.
Longevity testing offers a snapshot of health, but Dr Bishop said it is a tool to support healthier lifestyle choices, not a magic fix.
“It’s a little bit of fun, you can’t really hang your hat on it, but it just means that you’ve got health.”
