Australia has just three months to find a new host city for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) said on Wednesday its priority was finding an Australian host and appealed to the government for support.
Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate has offered to host the Games at an estimated cost of $700 million, but Queensland’s state government has ruled out support.
CGF chief executive Katie Sadlier said three other regions have emerged as potential hosts for the Games in either 2026 or 2027, but has not revealed what regions they are.
Speaking to media on Wednesday, Ms Sadlier said CGF has been working closely with Commonwealth Games Australia to figure out a solution.
“They are very, very keen to keep the Games in Australia and so we’re working to support them with their inquiries,” she said.
“And then there are three other regions that we are having conversations with, but they are very much of a preliminary sort of stage.
“But our aim is to be in a situation early in the new year to make a call on where a Games might go in 2026, 2027 or whether or not we might do something a bit different.”
Meanwhile, the Victorian government has been ordered to hand over documents which could reveal why the decision to cancel the Games was made.
A summons has been issued for all briefs provided to ministers responsible for the Premier, Cabinet, Treasury and Finance, Jobs, Skills Industry and Regions departments as well as their predecessors.
They have until November 30 to comply with the summons.
