Earlier this week the AFL announced a series of rule amendments for the 2024 season, aimed at enhancing the game while prioritising player safety.
Among these alterations are revisions to tribunal guidelines on smothering, adjustments regarding run-down tackles, and the prohibition of coaches’ whistling from the interchange bench, among other notable changes.
Former Brisbane Lions Captain Tom Rockliff joined Triple M’s Breakfast with Marto, Margaux and Dan offering his insights and reflections on the changes.

“Duty of care has gone through the roof.” Said Rockliff.
“We’re the only game sport in the world who has the need, or necessity to change rules from season to season.”
When discussing the new decision to ban whistling from the interchange bench, Rockliff suggested “It’s a ridiculous rule… Common Sense was left at the door.”
