One of the greatest players of the modern era in Lance ‘Buddy’ Franklin has announced his retirement from the AFL, effective immediately.
Telling his teammates on Monday, Franklin made his decision after suffering a calf injury in the Swans victory over the Bombers on Saturday night.
The superstar forward played over 350 games in his 18 year career, kicking 1066 goals, the fourth most in VFL/AFL history.
Franklin is a four-time Coleman Medallist, leading his club’s goalscoring 13 times, six times at the Hawks and seven at the Swans.
He also made the All-Australian team on eight different occasions, including being named captain of the side in 2018.
Franklin won two premierships in the AFL, both with the Hawks, in 2008 and 2013.
