Third Fatal Shark Attack in Five Weeks Sparks Concern Over Rising Sightings

A 17-year-old girl was tragically killed in a shark attack on Monday afternoon while swimming off Bribie Island, marking the third fatal shark attack in Australia within five weeks.

On Triple M Breakfast with Marto, Margaux, and Dan, host Greg ‘Marto’ Martin urged listeners in to call in and share their experiences, saying he’s noticed an increase in shark activity around Moreton Island and asking whether sightings are becoming more frequent in South East Queensland.

HEAR WHAT BRISBANE LOCALS HAVE TO SAY:

“No one wants to talk about it, because no one wants to kill animals, but simply, they’re an apex predator and they’re out of control.” said Marto.

Marto clarified that he’s not calling for sharks to be killed but emphasised the need for a better solution, as drum lines aren’t enough.

“The Bribie Local said sharks were regularly sighted at the beach. There are shark sightings here every day, but people don’t say anything because it’s so common. They’ll talk more about Dolphin sightings” Margaux said
