Port Adelaide Magpies running out for a SANFL grand final. Bernie Vince says they should split from the Power

Bernie Vince Calls For The Port Adelaide Magpies To Split From The Power

Bernie Vince has called for the Port Adelaide Magpies to split from the AFL side in order to maintain a presence in the SANFL.

BERNIE CALLS FOR THE PORT ADELAIDE MAGPIES TO SPLIT FROM THE POWER:

“The Magpies need to be somehow separate,” Bernie said on the Rush Hour with Bernie, Blewey and Jars.

“They’ve gotta keep them in the SANFL competition, you can not take the team that’s won the most premierships, with the most tradition, out of the competition.”

Bernie said that the Magpies divesting from the Power would be a boon for traditional Port fans.

“If they become their own SANFL team again… get back to traditional Port Adelaide Magpies, no AFL players dropping back in, look at the traditional supporters that come out and support them,” he said.

“It may take them a few years, as I said, to get back on their feet, but they need to be in that competition.”

Bernie’s comments come after reports that Port are looking to divest from the SANFL in order to join a planned national AFL reserves competition.

The Magpies are the most dominant side in the SANFL’s long history, playing in the competition since its inception in 1877 and claiming 36 flags.

Port chairman David Koch flagged concerns with their SANFL participation at the club’s best and fairest, saying it imposes on the AFL side’s ability to develop players.

“The two AFL clubs (Port and Adelaide) play under different rules to the other SANFL clubs which makes success difficult and frankly, has a detrimental impact on the development of our AFL players,” Koch said.

“No other AFL clubs have this imposition on their player development. It is an issue we are working to solve in the near future one way or another, and we will solve it.

“We need to be in the best second tier competition which allows us to develop our players.”
