Joey Montagna has backed in the Tigers to remain at the top over the next decade, saying Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper will act as the conduit between their ageing veterans and young talent.
“Haven’t we learned from Geelong that the good clubs now will find a way to stay at the top for the next 10 years and I think that’s exactly what Richmond are doing,” Joey claimed on Triple M’s Midweek Rub.
“They’re setting themselves up to stay competitive and be in that window that we call it for another five to 10 years.”
The Tigers retooled with a host of young talent including Josh Gibcus and Tyler Sonsie in 2021’s AFL Draft, then last year attacked the trade period by bringing in star GWS midfielders to bolster their engine room.
“I think they’ve got a lot of young kids on that list, they’ve got young key position players when you think about Gibcus and [Samson] Ryan and Noah Balta’s still really young.
“Taranto and Hopper are going to be very important as the bridge and the conduit between the ageing veterans that eventually are going to retire and the next wave of young talent.
“I think they’re setting themselves up for a long stint at the top. Now where that leaves them this year, and potentially next year, [they’ll] maybe sneak into the 8… I don’t think they’re a premiership threat because of the transition phase.”
