In the latest episode of the Howie Games podcast, Stephen Quartermain took a trip down memory lane, revisiting some of his most cherished sporting memories.
Listen to the actual audio from 2009, and Quarter’s version of what unfolded here:
Among the amazingly detailed tales of legendary moments like Debbie Flintoff-King’s golden run at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and Duncan Armstrong’s record-breaking swim, there was another incredible story that stood out—Triple M’s infamous ‘Rice Gate’ incident between Quartermain and Hawks legend Jason Dunstall.
It’s been over a decade since the ‘Rice Gate’ saga erupted, but the memory is still clear for Quartermain as he unpacked what really went down that fateful day when fried rice was poured all over him.
“It was just another game, but Trent Croad from Hawthorn had sustained a very serious injury, and I was told he’d never play again. And it escalated from there.”
“We were just having an argument, you know, and that’s OK. That’s robust discussion. That’s what happens. Then he just threw his box of food on me.”
What was meant to be a question turned into a heated debate which turned into one of the most bizarre incidents ever to unfold live in a commentary box.
“I thought, you pig… at the time it was, it was humiliating,” Quartermain shared.
“I’m happy to have a very robust, aggressive discussion. Don’t worry. I’ve been in the news business for 45 years, but it just took things a bit too far.”
“It was a bit upsetting on the day when you had food thrown on you when you’re trying to do your job. And, you know, I stand up for myself, but, anyway, it’s come and gone. You have a laugh. But I have no issue with Jason at all. He’d done a great job for the Hawks, champion of the game, great in the media, and I would have a beer with him any day.”
