Dual-international Wendell Sailor explained on The Rush Hour why he left Rugby League for Union, giving up one legendary mastermind for another.
LISTEN HERE:
In relation to Wallabies’ coach Eddie Jones’ interest in South Sydney Rabbitohs star Cameron Murray, Sailor explained what happened when he himself was stuck in a crossroads between both codes’ supercoaches.
After meeting with Jones, Sailor said, ‘this bloke’s a salesman, I like what he’s talking about!’
Straight away, Dell went to speak to his own mentor, NRL legend Wayne Bennett who at the time coached him at the Brisbane Broncos.
‘We want you to stay here,’ Bennett told Sailor.
‘But if it’s something you want to do, we’re all for you going to do it.’
Sailor explained that he was thankful for Bennett’s understanding and respected his nine-years of service which earned four premeirships.
‘You’ve done plenty for the club, we just want to see you do your best,’ Bennett finally said to Wendell.
But maybe Wayne Bennett didn’t really mind as he had Lote Tuqiri and Justin Hodges ready to fire, though the latter quickly jumped to the Sydney Roosters, scrapping the original plan to replace the Big Dell.
