The NRL is reportedly considering adapting the NBA playoff system in preparation the planned expansion of the competition to 20 teams.
Buzz Rothfield revealed on Triple M’s Saturday Scrum that there’s growing support for the 7th-10th placed teams to have a playoff weekend the week before the finals begin.
“Wildcard weekend, it’s getting support around the game for teams 7th to 10th the weekend before finals.” said Rothfield.

Under the proposed system the top 6 teams woulds automatically quality for the finals, while teams 7-10 would playoff in an elimination weekend to determine the final two spots in the eight.
