Both Danny Weidler and Michael Chammas praised NSW Blues boss Michael Maguire on Footy Talk’s Journos Show as he was able to step away from his usual disciplined character as his side aim to level the series.
Maguire and rival Queensland Maroons’ boss Billy Slater war of words spilled out into the public eye leading into Game Two of State of Origin.
LISTEN HERE:
“Good on you Madge because previously you’ve been quite boring,” said Weidler.
“And Madge [usually] likes to be boring, he doesn’t want to give us ammo.
“Good on Madge for throwing a grenade or whatever you want to call it at Billy.”
This is all in relation to Billy Slater sharing his frustrations over Joseph Sua’ali’i’s hit on Maroons’ fullback Reece Walsh early in Origin 1, which led to the former’s sending off.
Weidler explained why he believed Maguire biting back in the media was the right thing to do.
“Reason 1: He genuinely believes that Queensland have been saying things that are totally unfair and he’s got to protect his players.
“Reason 2: He wants to put some heat on Queensland.
“Reason 3: I think it’s to take away from the attention from Latrell Mitchell, because we both know, a lot of attention will be on him.”
