Bulldogs General Manager Gus Gould initially knocked back the job multiple times before deciding to take on the role of rebuilding the club.
“I actually knocked back that job 3 or 4 times, I’d had 3 or 4 inquiries in the years leading up to actually accepting a position there.” said Phil Gould on the Footy Talk League podcast.

“When I got there they’d sort of been last on the ladder for a couple of years, it was a club that was damaged.”
“Being in a losing football club is not a place to be, it’s not enjoyable.”
“I sort of knocked it back a couple of times simply because, to be honest, I didn’t know if I could fix it.”
The Bulldogs made the finals this season for the first time since 2016.
