Triple M’s and rugby league great James Graham has slammed Phil Gould’s controversial comments on the NRL’s independent doctors, declaring it’s vital a set of protocols and independent doctors remain in place to protect the sport in a court of law.
LISTEN HERE:
Gould raised eyebrows on Monday when said on Nine’s 100% Footy that the NRL’s independent doctor system is the “greatest abomination perpetrated on our game in history”.
The comments made by Gould were in response to an incident involving Knights star Kalyn Ponga, who was controversially taken off the field during Round 1, despite the playmaker claiming after the game that he was “literally fine”.
In another incident, Raiders coach Ricky Stuart also raised headlines when he questioned the NRL’s independent doctors, after Sebastian Kris was taken off the ground despite being cleared to return shortly after.
The NRL’s approach to concussions currently sees an independent doctor with the ability to pull players from the field.
“I understand now why we need to do this as a game,” Graham said on Triple M’s NRL coverage.
