Sharks superstar Nicho Hynes has not been charged for his spray at a touch judge in yesterday’s loss to Manly, but league legend Gorden Tallis says he should have been.
Tallis says the NRL Match Review Committee is inconsistent after Broncos fullback Reece Walsh was suspended for swearing at a referee following a marathon trial last month.
The incident happened when a cut-out ball thrown by Hynes was called forward by on-field referee Peter Gough, which led to Hynes giving touch judge Belinda Sharpe a spray.
Gough wasn’t having any of it, telling Hynes: “You do not have the right to talk to me or my team in any manner. Do it again and you’ll find yourself off the field, enough.”
Walsh copped three weeks for his outburst, forcing him to miss Origin 3 in Sydney, and Tallis says he wants more consistency from the NRL.
“I watched the pass,” Tallis said. “I think (Hynes) was frustrated.
“I don’t think it’s in Nico’s DNA. I don’t think it’s in Reece Walsh’s either.
“But if they (NRL) are consistent, no one knew if (Walsh) was talking to Patrick Carrigan – it took four hours.
“But you knew who Nicho Hynes was talking to.
“So there’s the inconsistency with the fans.”
Hynes was charged for tripping in the Sharks 30-26 loss to the Sea Eagles, but will be able to play this weekend with an early guilty plea which comes with a $1000 fine.
