Footy Talk League hosts Gordon Tallis and Ben Dobbin have clashed over reports St George Illawarra star Ben Hunt won’t stay at the Dragons if he is made to play hooker.
Hunt, 33, is on contract with the Dragons until the end of the 2025 season but The Daily Telegraph reporter and Footy Talk regular David Riccio says Hunt will request an immediate release if the incoming coach – whoever that may be – will task him with playing dummy half.
Tallis says Hunt has played his best footy wearing the No.9 for Queensland and Australia, while Dobbin says Hunt’s consistent week in, week out performances at halfback is where he’s done his best work.
But regardless of who is the Anthony Griffin’s full-time replacement at the Dragons, Tallis says Hunt should do whatever the new coach asks of him.
HEAR GORDY AND DOBBO CLASH OVER BEN HUNT’S REPORTED ULTIMATUM AT THE DRAGONS:
“Ben Hunt deserves the right to actually say ‘hey, listen, I want some input into who the next coach is and also, I’m not going to be playing No.9 for your week in week at the back end of my career’,” Dobbin said on Footy Talk.
Tallis disagreed: “The boss is the boss. It is as simple as that.
“If I’m coaching and I want you to play on the wing, you play on the wing.
“If I want you to open bat, you open bat. If I want you first drop, you’re first drop. If I want you coming in No.5, that’s what happens.”
Tallis made it clear he was not pointing a finger a Ben Hunt, but at players who walk out of a club for not taking orders from a coach and getting what they want.
“It’s about the player,” Tallis said.
“Whatever is best for the team, your ego has to go in your pocket.
“And you got to play whatever the coach wants you to play. Period.”
