A month before the 2004 tour of India, Adam Gilchrist was merely the wicket keeper and deputy to skipper to Ricky Ponting.
But he ended the series as the first Australian captain to win a series in India in over three decades.
And – as he told Willow Talk with Adam Peacock and Brad Hodge – it’s a remarkable story from start to finish, detailing how he found out and the demons he had to overcome to pull it off.
“Ricky joined us mid-tour, he broke his thumb in 2004 in the Champions Trophy in England,” he explained.
“He put a catch down – rare time that he put a catch down – but not only did that, went off the field. He just didn’t go off the field, Punter. He’d just grin and bear it. He went off and I knew straight away, ‘oh shit, he’s broken his finger’ and I immediately thought I’m going to have to captain in India.
“I started absolutely shitting bricks…”
