Nick Riewoldt has applauded both Nathan Murphy and Angus Brayshaw for their medical retirements, labelled them “pioneers of this self-preservation movement”.
Murphy announced his retirement on Tuesday morning after 57 games and a premiership for Collingwood, in the wake of a 10th concussion in last year’s grand final.
Riewoldt – who recalled a time during his generation of wanting to do everything to play through injury and win – paid tribute to Murphy and all players who are starting to look after themselves on Tuesday’s episode of Footy Talk.
“For a young man, it is agonising…they will look back with the benefit of hindsight, particularly with premierships in their back pocket and say ‘I achieved something really, really special’,” he said.
