Settling in to watch a Christmas movie is one of the hallmarks of the festive season for a lot of us, with titles like Elf, Die Hard and Love Actually at the top of the most-streamed list.
But does it feel like it’s been a while since we’ve seen a great Christmas movie?
Time Out’s list of the ten best ever doesn’t feature a single title from after 2005.
Australian TV personality Ash London unpacks the Christmas movie dilemma on The Briefing:
Redditers have noticed there hasn’t been a majorly popular and classic-worthy Christmas movie since Elf in 2003.
Australian TV personality Ash London said modern day Christmas movies aren’t blockbusters, rather Netflix and Hallmark releases.
“If we think back to when we were kids, they were big budget. There were movies that we saw in the cinemas and at the movies. They had very famous people in them and they kind of became instant classics,” London said.
London said that Christmas films today can get away with being worse and they still bring in money.
“The films that will make money for Netflix, they will make money for the actors. And I think more and more it’s kind of becoming more acceptable for these actors to do these. Like, I don’t wanna call it a cash grab, but it’s a Christmas film,” she said.
“No one’s gonna be angry about it if it’s a bit ****, no one’s gonna complain about it. They’re gonna go. It was a bit. ****. I loved it. I’d watch it again.”
