Why Are We Hooked On The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives?

The internet is abuzz with the rise of #tradwives, and now The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives is taking over TV screens.

The show follows a group of women who identify as Mormon, delving into their personal lives and the drama that unfolds within their community.

Far from the stereotypical image of conservative, stay-at-home mothers, The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives presents a more complex and provocative picture.

Why you’re hearing about Mormon wives so much right now

On today’s The Briefing, we sit down with Ruby Feneley, a journalist and writer for Marie Claire.

Ruby recently penned an article about the show, exploring how it contributes to conversations surrounding modern Mormonism, feminism, and the evolving roles of women within these communities.

Feneley said the fascination with this series came at a time when #tradwives and Mormon-themed content were trending online.

“I think at this moment in time, women in my age group, Millennial women, are feeling really conflicted about the lives that we’re living,” she said.

Feneley said that the show also portrayed a version of “imperfect motherhood”, with many of the women openly discussing their experiences and challenges.

“These kind of really openly struggling women who are talking really openly about these issues about not wanting to get divorced from their husbands, wanting to have orgasms, are kind of, I guess, exaggeratedly patriarchal.”
