Vatican releases first image of Pope Francis since hospitalisation

The Vatican has released the first photograph of Pope Francis since his hospitalisation over a month ago.

The image shows the 88-year-old pontiff seated in a wheelchair, praying in the chapel of Rome’s Gemelli Hospital where he has been receiving treatment for double pneumonia.

Admitted on February 14 with a severe respiratory infection, Pope Francis had not been seen publicly until now.

The Vatican reports that his condition is stable, though he continues to undergo respiratory therapy and physiotherapy.

Despite his hospitalisation, the Pope has remained engaged with Church matters.

On Saturday, he approved a new three-year process to consider reforms for the global Catholic Church, signaling his intention to continue his papacy despite health challenges.

Pope Francis has a history of lung issues, having had part of one lung removed during his youth due to pleurisy. This medical background has made him more susceptible to respiratory infections, complicating his current recovery.

As the Pope continues his recuperation, the Vatican has not provided a specific timeline for his discharge, emphasising that his recovery is progressing slowly.

The global Catholic community remains hopeful for his swift return to health and leadership.
