“He was known colloquially as the angel of death,” NSW police detective superintendent Danny Doherty told reporters.
“He lived by the sword. Died by the sword. There’s no surprise to the police that he was murdered in the way he has been murdered.”
Superintendent Doherty said there were currently “too many suspects, too many motives” to determine why Ayoub had been targeted.
He added that it appeared Ayoub had been attacked by more than one gunman with multiple shots fired.
Emergency services were then called to Abeckett Street in Granville at 3.45am after reports of a car fire.
A sedan, which had been reported stolen, was found alight
Crime scenes have been established, and investigations have commenced, with two men reportedly seen leaving the scene in another vehicle.
At this stage, it is unknown whether the two incidents are related.
