Uber has agreed to pay $271.8 million to Australian taxi operators in a world-first class action settlement, following a five-year legal battle.
The settlement compensates over eight thousand taxi drivers and owners who suffered financial loses due to Uber’s establishment in the Australian market.

“We are extremely proud to have succeeded today in holding Uber to account,” Maurice Blackburn principal lawyer Michael Donelly said.
“In securing a $271.8 million sum that will finally put real money back into the accounts of people who have been devastated.”
Since 2018, Uber has made significant contributions to state-level compensation schemes for taxi operators, and Donelly said today’s settlement puts these issues in the past.
